Howard K. Stern Arrested For Giving Drugs To Anna Nicole Smith

More than two years after Anna Nicole Smith died from a lethal cocktail of prescription drugs, authorities have filed the first criminal charges -- targeting her former boyfriend, Howard K. Stern.

The 40-year-old who once claimed to be the father of her daughter Dannielynn, has been charged with giving thousands of prescription drugs in the years leading up to her fatal drug overdose.

The two doctors, Sandeep Kapoor and Khristine Eroshevich, have been charged with three felony counts of conspiracy and other charges of fraudulent prescriptions, including "prescribing, administering or dispensing a controlled substance to an addict."

"These individuals repeatedly and excessively furnished thousands of prescription pills to Anna Nicole Smith, often for no legitimate medical purpose," California Attorney General Jerry Brown said in a statement. He said the doctors "violated their ethical obligations as physicians, while Mr. Stern funneled highly addictive drugs to Ms. Smith."

"Dr. Kapoor never prescribed medications for Anna Nicole in my name and that is what the medical board will find out," Stern said in a previous interview, but authorities have uncovered exactly the opposite. They believe the doctors gave the drugs to Stern, who then gave them to Smith.

The three surrendered to police Thursday night and have posted bail set at $20,000. Arraignment dates have not yet been scheduled.

Anna Nicole Smith died at age 39 on February 8, 2007 after she was found unresponsive in a Florida hotel room. The medical examiner's office ruled that Smith died of "combined drug intoxication." Her death came just months after her 20-year-old son Daniel also died of a lethal combination of drugs.
