History Channel Says It Won't Show Completed 'Kennedys' Miniseries

The History channel has announced that it has cancelled plans to broadcast its ambitious and much-anticipated miniseries 'The Kennedys' in the United States.

"Upon completion of the production of The Kennedys, History has decided not to air the 8-part miniseries on the network," the network says in a statement.

"While the film is produced and acted with the highest quality, after viewing the final product in its totality, we have concluded this dramatic interpretation is not a fit for the History brand."

The multi-million miniseries was to have been broadcast this spring with Katie Holmes (photosKatie Holmes photos) as Jacqueline Kennedy and Greg Kinnear as John F. Kennedy.

It had been embroiled in controversy since the project was first announced in December 2009, based on an early version of the script. But History Channel and parent company A&E said at the time that the script had been revised and that the final version had been vetted by historians for accuracy.

But a network spokesperson says they didn't want to risk airing the project, due to any inaccuracies that would have undoubtedly brought backlash from advertisers and viewers.

"We recognize historical fiction is an important medium for storytelling and commend all the hard work and passion that has gone into the making of the series, but ultimately deem this as the right programming decision for our network."

The miniseries is still scheduled to air in Canada on March 6, and will be broadcast internationally not long after.

Meanwhile, 'New York Magazine' reports Caroline Kennedy personally lobbied Disney's Anne Sweeney, who serves on the A&E Television Networks group board, to scrap the project.

It says Caroline Kennedy, who has a book deal with Disney's publishing division, basically told Sweeney that she wouldn't cooperate in promotion of the book -- which is to include previously unreleased interviews with Jackie Kennedy -- if History went ahead with the miniseries.
