'G.I. Joe: Retaliation' Bumped To March 2013 For 3D Conversion

Just a month before its scheduled June release, 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation' has been bumped to 2013.

Paramount says it has chosen to delay the film by nine months because it's now decided to convert the film to 3D before release and wants to do it right.

"We're going to do a conscientious 3D job because we've seen how it can better box office internationally," says an executive from the studio.

That means the film will be able to charge more per ticket and, maybe more importantly, move it from direct competition 'The Amazing Spider-Man', which was to open just days later.

Even so, the decision is curious given it didn't let Jon Chu shoot 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation' in 3D in the first place with his experience with 'Step Up 3D' and the 3D 'Justin Bieber: Never Say Never.'

In fact, Chu revealed what went on in discussions with the studio at Southwest Film Festival.

"There was a point where we were talking about it when I first came. It seemed like a natural thing, but I told them, 'I know 3D. This is what we need. If we're going to do 3D, we're going to do it right.' It had a certain price tag to it, and I was like, if you guys are down I'm down, but I do need more time to do it right," he told THR.

"And they were about to do it but they cut it just a little bit short, and I said, 'if you guys are going to cut it short there is no point.' Let's make a movie -- let's go for it and we'll go all out."

"And we shot on film, super-35, and I thought this may be one of the last times I get to shoot on film, and it was actually kind of freeing. I mean, I love 3D and I think there is a lot you can do with it, but there is something to be said about just not waiting for anything."

'G.I. Joe: Retaliation' is said to have cost around $130 million. It stars Dwayne Johnson, Bruce Willis, Adrianne Palicki and Jonathan Price.
