'Eternal Sunshine' Director Lined Up For 'Green Hornet'

Director Michel Gondry has been lined up to direct Columbia Pictures' upcoming adaptation of the 'Green Hornet' TV series.

Hong Kong comedian Stephen Chow had originally signed on to direct the film and play Kato, the sidekick portrayed by Bruce Lee in the 1960s series. However, he later quit saying he wanted to focus on developing a superhero spoof with Jack Black instead.

Gondry is best known for directing 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind', a movie for which he also won an Academy Award as a screenwriter.

The French director is well known for his inventive visual style, as evidenced by the Smirnoff vodka ad below. A little known fact is that the commercial actually made the earliest known use of 'bullet time', which is now a staple in Hollywood -- more than a year before it was seen in 'The Matrix'.

Seth Rogen will play the Green Hornet, while Nicolas Cage and Cameron Diaz (photosCameron Diaz photos) are also in talks to star in the movie. Cage as a gangster villain and Diaz a reporter.

The Green Hornet, which debuted on radio in 1936, focuses on a newspaper publisher by day who by night goes out in his masked 'Green Hornet' identity to fight crime as a vigilante, accompanied by his similarly masked sidekick Kato.
