Ellen Pompeo Says She Would've Left 'Grey's Anatomy' If She Was Younger

A mainstay at 'Grey's Anatomy', Ellen Pompeo admits she would've left the show if she was younger.

Pompeo returns for a 13th season of the ABC drama this fall and in a candid interview with People magazine, the 46-year-old actress explains why she decided to stay.

"My decision to stay on Grey's was based solely on age," she says. "At 33, I was wise enough to know my clock was already ticking in Hollywood."

Pompeo had only starred in minor roles before she landed the role of Meredith Grey at 34.

She says if she had got the role when she was younger, she "probably would have done my time, then gone out to search for other things."

However, realizing it's "challenging" to land other roles in her late 30s and 40s, she decided to stay with the job she knows.

"I thought, 'Why would I leave something that is super successful and pays me great to search the landscape?' I decided that I would stay on Grey's and be grateful and try to ride it out for as long as I could. And I am very happy that I made the decision to stay. It's only gotten better with time."

"Watching myself age on TV is miserable. To be honest, it's the toughest part of my job," she laughs.
