Edward Snowden Gives Thumbs Up To Oliver Stone Film After Screening

Edward Snowden says that Oliver Stone's dramatization of his story is a "pretty accurate portrayal."

In a live chat Thursday night following the first public screening of Stone's 'Snowden', the NSA whistleblower said the film wasn't as dramatized as he expected.

"I don't think anybody looks forward to having a movie made about themselves, particularly someone who is a privacy advocate," Snowden laughed.

"I'm not an actor. I don't think anyone in politics is really charismatic enough to connect with people on issues that are so abstract."

"But actors can reach new audiences in new ways and get people talking about things that they don't have time to read or to look for in the academic setting. By watching the lived experiences and tying it back in that magic Oliver Stone moment, it was something that made me really nervous but I think it worked."

Snowden said he also hopes the film sheds new light on his relationship with girlfriend Lindsay Mills.

"I think the media was very unfair to Lindsay at the time and treated her in a very condescending way," he said. Shailene Woodley (photosShailene Woodley photos) plays Mills.

Snowden is portrayed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Although Snowden appears as himself at the very end of the film.

He also contributed some ideas to the film, including using a Rubik's Cube to smuggle the classified files out of the NSA. The film couldn't depict what really happened because it's not in public record yet.

"It was a good idea and we ran with it," Stone said.

'Snowden', for which a new trailer has been released, has a release date of September 16.
