Eddie Murphy Top Choice To Host 84th Academy Awards

Comedian and actor Eddie Murphy is in talks to host the 84th Academy Awards.

Sources close to the show say Murphy has emerged as producers Brett Ratner and Don Mischer's top choice to host the awards show after the two struck up a friendship while filming the upcoming 'Tower Heist'.

Ratner and Mischer are scheduled to meet with Academy president Tom Sherak on Tuesday to discuss who they would like to have host the show.

Besides Murphy, Billy Crystal, who hosted the Oscars eight times between 1990 and 2004, is also being considered after he recently expressed interest in hosting once again.

Two stars who definitely won't be on the shortlist are Anne Hathaway (photosAnne Hathaway photos) and James Franco, whose were roundly panned for their performance.

Ratner recently said that he wanted comedy to be "a big part" of the broadcast.

Murphy has experience performing live with 'Saturday Night Live'. Although he hasn't done a notable live performance in front of a large audience in a number of years. Not to mention, the actor hasn't had a hit in years.
