Ed O'Neill: Sofia Vergara Deserved Emmy More Than 'Glee's Jane Lynch

'Modern Family's Ed O'Neill thinks his on-screen wife, Sofia Vergara (photosSofia Vergara photos), deserved to win the Emmy much more than 'Glee's Jane Lynch.

"I love Jane, honestly I do," O'Neill said at a recent critics conference, according to TV Guide.

"I'm dying to star in one of Christopher Guest's movies alongside her, but I don't think she should have gotten the Emmy for that part. Sue Sylvester is just a one-note character."

O'Neill said he thought co-star Sofia Vergara should have taken home the prize. As it turned out, 'Glee' won for best comedy over 'Modern Family' and Jane Lynch won for best supporting actress in a comedy series.

"Sofia is just so, so funny," he explained. "I don't think people realize how hilarious she is. She's so sharp with her wit, it's amazing."

The former 'Married... With Children' star also revealed how he initially turned down the role, because he wasn't looking to return to television.

"Then I read the script, and I said to myself, 'Oh God, this is so good.' I put the script down and came back and read it a second time and thought, 'I have to do this.'"

But when his manager got back to producers, they informed him that they were already negotiating with Craig T. Nelson. Luckily for O'Neill, Nelson dropped out and took a role on 'Parenthood' instead.
