Donald Trump Recalls Starting With 'Small' Million-Dollar Loan From Father

Donald Trump may be a billionaire but, during a town hall forum on 'Today', the real estate mogul said he still remembered the obstacles he faced when starting out.

Asked by host Matt Lauer whether he had ever been told "no" in his life, Trump said: "Oh many times. My whole life, really, has been a no."

"It has not been easy for me. I started off in Brooklyn. My father gave me a small loan of a million dollars. I came into Manhattan, and I had to pay him back, and I had to pay him back with interest," he explained.

"But I came into Manhattan and I started buying properties, and I did great."

Lauer then asked Trump about his characterization that the million dollars was "small."

"That probably is going to seem pretty crazy to a lot of people," said Lauer. "Let's just put this in perspective. You said it hasn't been easy for you, but my dad gave me a million-dollar loan."

"You're right, but a million dollars isn't very much compared to what I've built," Trump replied.

"I mean, I've built one of the great companies, but it's always been, you know, 'you can't do this,' 'you can't do that.'"

To Trump's remarks, one commenter on social media said: "That 1% life is a trip."
