Donald Sutherland To Play 'Hunger Games' President

Veteran actor Donald Sutherland has been cast as President Snow in the film adaptation of 'Hunger Games'.

Sutherland's casting is the latest in the high-profile Gary Ross film. The project already includes Jennifer Lawrence (photosJennifer Lawrence photos), Woody Harrelson, Stanley Tucci, Elizabeth Banks, Lenny Kravitz, Wes Bentley and Paula Malcomson.

"President Snow has been the autocratic ruler of Panem and its contained districts for some 25 years at the outset of the story," says Lionsgate in its official release. "He is cruel and ruthless in his intimidation and control tactics."

Suzanne Collins' hit novel focuses on the nation of Panem, formed out of the ruins of what was once North America.

Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the annual Hunger Games. Part twisted entertainment, part government intimidation tactic, the Hunger Games are a fight-to-the-death live nationally televised event.

Jennifer Lawrence will play the lead role of Katniss as she fights to survive after she volunteers to take her sister's place. She is best known for her breakout role in 'Winter's Bone' and stars in Matthew Vaughn's 'X Men: First Class' this month.

The film has a current release date of March 23, 2012.
