Don Cheadle To Replace Terrence Howard In 'Iron Man' Sequel

Don Cheadle will be replacing Terrence Howard in the 'Iron Man' Sequel, according to reports.

Terrence Howard played Jim Rhodes, Tony Stark's best friend in the summer blockbuster. And if you're up with your comic history, you know that Jim Rhodes also eventually becomes War Machine -- who assumes the mantle of Iron Man after Stark's lapse into alcoholism.

Director Jon Favreau has hinted that War Machine may appear in the second film, and threw out a reference to the future armor-clad hero in the first movie as Howard's character looked at the silver suit of armor and said "next time" he would see what it felt like to wear the suit.

Apparently, negotiations with Howard fell through over differences on the actor's pay, among other reasons. Once that happened, Marvel moved to secure Don Cheadle for the role.

Marvel is known to lowball talent and evidently attempted to do the same in negotiations with director Jon Favreau for the sequel. Change in the cast is never good when you're coming off a successful franchise debut, but the good news is that Don Cheadle is by no means a step down. He received an Oscar nomination for his performance in 'Hotel Rwanda' and should be able to pull off the role seamlessly, even if it's with a little different flavour.

Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow (photosGwyneth Paltrow photos) are expected to return. The sequel is currently slated for a May 7, 2010 release.
