'Divergent' Dominates, 'Muppets Most Wanted' Flops At Box Office

'Divergent' dominated the weekend box office with $56 million but 'Muppets Most Wanted' was not nearly as fortunate in its debut.

The solid opening weekend for the action film, the first in a series based on the best-selling books by Veronica Roth, gave rise to a new franchise for Lionsgate.

Starring Shailene Woodley (photosShailene Woodley photos), 'Divergent' lured young moviegoers with dystopian drama. The film cost a relatively poultry $85 million to produce, which it almost entirely made back. And it hasn't even begun rolling out overseas.

Meanwhile, Disney's Muppets sequel 'Muppets Most Wanted', with Ricky Gervais and Tina Fey, fared, was a distant second earning just $16.5 million over the weekend.

2011's 'The Muppets' with nearly double that at $29.2 million. However, the film hasn't had the same buzz the previous one carried, being the first movie featuring the characters in several years.

'Mr. Peabody & Sherman' held up better than expected with $11.7 million in its third week.
