Disney To Make Live-Action 'Lion King' With Jon Favreau

It's already been on Broadway and now Disney is giving 'The Lion King' a live-action remake.

Disney has announced that Jon Favreau, who helmed its CGI laden 'Jungle Book' remake, will direct the film.

With no human characters, one may wonder why Disney is choosing to do a live-action remake instead of an animated reimagining. However, if you've saw Favreau's 'Jungle Book' you know how far CGI effects have come and it may actually be easier to do such a film than one that has both species.

Like its upcoming 'Beauty and the Beast' live-action remake, 'The Lion King' will include songs from the animated film.

The original 'Lion King', released in June 1994, grossed $968.8 million and won two Oscars. It finished its theatrical run as the highest-grossing release of 1994 and the second highest-grossing film of all time.

It won Academy Awards for the original song 'Can You Feel the Love Tonight' and original score, plus two Grammy Awards, with the soundtrack selling over 14 million copies alone.

The Broadway musical has been running for nearly two decades and Disney Junior began airing a sequel television series 'The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar' in January.
