Director Responds To Charge That 'Muppets' Are Communist

You know someone would eventually ask 'Muppets' director James Bobin about Fox News' allegation that his version of the felt puppets were communist.

"It's amazing how far the left will go to manipulate your kids, to give the anti-corporate message," a guest on the network's business segment said last week. "I mean this is a Muppets movie for goodness sakes. The only thing green up on your screen should be Kermit the frog."

"They are using class-warfare to brainwash our kids, They've been doing it for decades. Hollywood, the left, the media, they hate the oil industry," the analyst said of the film's villain, Tex Richman. "They hate corporate America."

But Bobin says that wasn't the intent at all and it's just a matter of drumming up controversy to fill airtime.

"It's a very strange turn of events to hear a question like that," he tells THR. "Cable news is 24 hours long so you have to fill it up with something."

"No, the Muppets are not communist. And the character of Tex Richman is not an allegory for capitalism in any way."

"The character is called Tex Richman. It's a joke. Clearly he is a classic, old school bad guy," he explains. "He's bad not because he works for an oil company but because he's evil. No, it's not a communist movie in any way."
