'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' Dominates In Opening Weekend

'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' didn't monkey around at the box office in its opening weekend.

The film bolted to the top of the charts with a $72.6 million debut, according to studio estimates. That even put it ahead of the previous film 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes', which debuted with $55 million.

Directed by Matt Reeves, 'Dawn' sees Andy Serkis return in the role of Caesar. Ten years after the outbreak of the Simian flu, the growing nation of genetically evolved apes is threatened by a band of humans who have survived the devastating virus.

The film has received praise from both critics and audiences, a rare feat for a summer release.

After two weeks on top, the 'Transformers: Age of Extinction' slid to second with $16.5 million while 'Tammy' was in third with $12.9 million.
