David Letterman's Blackmailer Freed From New York Jail

The man who was sent to jail for trying to blackmail David Letterman over the comedian's shenanigans with female staffers is now a free man.

Robert 'Joe' Halderman served four months of his six-month sentence in the case.

He got time off for good behavior, according to correction department records.

Halderman now only has to serve 1,000 hours of community service, which involves providing job training to convicts and the formerly homeless.

"He survived this, and he's glad to be getting off the island," says his lawyer, Gerald Shargel.

Earlier this spring the 52-year-old '48 Hours' producer pleaded guilty to attempted grand larceny and demanding $2 million from Letterman to keep his office affair a secret.

Despite being fired, Halderman is up for an Emmy for an April 2009 story about an American exchange student charged with murder in Italy. The news Emmys will be announced on September 27.

It was the threat of Robert Halderman and the case going public that spurred Letterman to admit that he had sex with women on his staff. The talk show host apologized on-air to his wife twice after his first apology -- which didn't go far enough -- did not go over too well.

Regina Lasko was his girlfriend for 23 years before they married last year.
