'Dancing with the Stars' Shrunk Down To Monday Night Block

ABC is shrinking down 'Dancing with the Stars' from three hours a week to two to reinvigorate the franchise and at the same time make room for Marvel's 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D' on Tuesday nights.

"We want to focus it in," says ABC President Paul Lee. "We're planning to do two seasons a year and we think that by taking the results show and building it into the two-hour block from 8 to 10 on Monday nights, we can really build a sense of occasion to that and drive viewership to Monday nights."

Lee said 'S.H.I.E.L.D.' would take over 'Dancing's spot on Tuesdays at 8 PM, "which we think is the perfect place for that show. It's a one-two punch for us."

The ballroom dancing competition has aired sixteen seasons and Lee says producers "have a number of great ideas" for the next season. But one thing viewers can watch for is a younger cast.

"One of the critical things each cycle is to make sure we nail the casting," Lee explained. "So certainly we're going to make sure as we focus on Monday that we focus as well on casting that will help us age it down."

Lee also said at ABC Television's Upfront presentation Tuesday night, which unveiled the new shows in its lineup, that the network will have fewer interruptions in the schedule and plans to run series with 12 new episodes in a row before a gap.
