Daily Mail To Pay Melania Trump $2.9 Million Over 'Escort' Article

The UK's Daily Mail will pay approximately $2.9 million in damages to settle a libel claim brought against them by the First Lady Melania Trump.

Last September Melania sued the paper over allegations that questioned the nature of her work in the 1990s when she worked as a model.

The paper alleged that "she provided services beyond simply modelling," implying she was a high-priced escort.

The article also claimed that she met Trump three years before they said and "staged" their meeting as a "ruse."

In her lawsuit against the publication, Melania's lawyers complained that the story had damaged her image and "once-in-a-lifetime" chance to cash in.

"Plaintiff had the unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, as an extremely famous and well-known person, as well as a former professional model and brand spokesperson, and successful businesswoman, to launch a broad-based commercial brand in multiple product categories, each of which could have garnered multi-million dollar business relationships for a multi-year term during which Plaintiff is one of the most photographed women in the world," it read.

These product categories included apparel, accessories, shoes, jewelry, cosmetics, hair care, skin care and fragrances.

In its apology statement, the Daily Mail said: "We accept that these allegations about Mrs Trump are not true and we retract and withdraw them. We apologise to Mrs Trump for any distress that our publication caused her. To settle Mrs Trump's two lawsuits against us, we have agreed to pay her damages and costs."
