CW Passed On 'Supergirl' Before Series Landed At CBS

During the Television Critics Association panel on Tuesday, CW President Mark Pedowitz revealed that his network had passed on 'Supergirl' before it landed at CBS.

Pedowitz said it didn't have anything to do with the show's female superhero or it's tone. Rather, he just didn't want a fourth comic book show with 'Arrow', 'Flash' and 'Legends of Tomorrow' already on its lineup.

"Last summer Flash had not been on the air yet," Pedowitz said. "We had Arrow and Flash and we were not planning to do another DC character. Supergirl was talked about by Warner Brothers to us."

"Because we weren't planning to do another DC character at that time, they took it out and did the right thing. I hope they're a great success at CBS."

Asked whether there would be crossover episodes involving 'Supergirl' and his DC Comics shows since executive Greg Berlanti is involved, Pedowitz said he was open to it but the ultimate decision would be left up to Berlanti.

"I leave that to Greg Berlanti and his team," Pedowitz said. "If they can make it work, great. If they cannot, that's fine. As you know we are going to do some cross promotion together, but that's Greg's call because he understands his shows better than I do in some ways because he's there."

"We have obviously to make the shows really stand on their own," said Berlanti when he spoke to reporters.

"I always approach these things as a fan myself and I always love when there's a bigger universe at work, but at the same time these shows really have to function on their own."

Meanwhile, the CW boss confirmed that Matt Ryan will reprise his role as John Constantine for one episode of 'Arrow'. NBC's 'Constantine' was cancelled due to poor ratings last year.
