Creating BB-8's Voice In 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens'

'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' sound editors talk about creating BB-8's voice in this clip from the collector's edition Blu-ray.

We see comedians Ben Schwartz and Bill Hader recording dialogue that would later be replaced by the iconic sound effects.

Special effects artist Neal Scanlan has said that the robot's design came from an original sketch by Abrams, saying "It was a very simple sketch, beautiful in its simplicity of a ball with this little dome on top."

The design on each side panel is different to help the viewer track BB-8's movement.

Abrams also named the robot BB-8 because "of how he looked to me, with the 8, obviously, and then the two B's."
