Cobie Smulders In Final Talks To Play Maria Hill In 'Avengers'

Cobie Smulders (photosCobie Smulders photos) is the frontrunner to play Samuel L. Jackson's female sidekick in the upcoming superhero flick, 'The Avengers'.

Smulders, who currently starts on 'How I Met Your Mother', has reportedly beat out Morena Baccarin, Jessica Lucas and Mary Elizabeth Winstead for the role as Maria Hill, the director of the planetary defense and intelligence service S.H.I.E.L.D in the Marvel universe.

Speculation about the role began after Jackson revealed on 'Late Night with Jimmy Fallon' that he would be getting a female sidekick in Joss Whedon's upcoming feature about the team of superheroes.

The film, currently set for release on May 4, 2012, will also star all the major players Marvel has been setting up over the last few years including Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk, Chris Evans as Captain America, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Jeremy Renner as Hawkey and Scarlett Johansson (photosScarlett Johansson photos) as Black Widow.

'The Avengers' originally consisted of Ant-Man, Wasp, Iron Man, Thor, and the Hulk. The team has featured humans, mutants, robots, gods, aliens, supernatural beings, and even former villains.
