Charles Barkley To Serve Jail Time For DUI

Charles Barkley will spend five days in jail after pleading guilty to drunken-driving charges.

The outspoken NBA analyst and Hall of Fame basketball player has been sentenced to 10 days in jail after pleading guilty to two counts of driving under the influence for his December 31 arrest in Scottsdale, Arizona. He also pleaded 'responsible' to a third charge of running a red light.

Barkley is expected to begin his sentence on March 21. The sentence will be reduced to 5 days if he completes an alcohol treatment program.

However, how long Barkley will actually end up serving is anyone's guess as in such cases inmates are frequently released early to avoid 'overcrowding'. But since the incident happened in Arizona and not Los Angeles, which is notorious for the practice, there is a small chance Barkley could end up serving most of it.

Barkley had a blood alcohol content of .149 when he was stopped, almost twice the state limit. He made a formal apology for the incident when he returned to his job as TNT NBA's analyst last week after a six-week absence: "Clearly everybody knows I got a DUI. That's unacceptable, 100 percent my fault. I screwed up, I made a mistake, I'm sorry, I apologize."

His network-imposed suspension was followed by T-Mobile pulling ads featuring the analyst: "As far as the bigwigs at TNT, I never trusted them 110 percent," Barkley said.

"I've been here eight years and we don't spend a lot of time together, but I want to tell them it meant a great deal for them to stick by me through my screw-up."

Barkley played 16 seasons for the Philadelphia 76ers, Phoenix Suns and Houston Rockets. He was an 11-time All Star and was named one of the 50 best players in NBA history.
