'Bruno' Tops Box Office With $30.4 Million Weekend

Sacha Baron Cohen's 'Bruno' opened on top of the domestic box office after taking in an estimated $30.4 million

An opening that handily beat the debut of the comedy provocateur's 'Borat', which earned $26.5 million in its opening weekend, but raised questions about the movie's staying power after it began with a big Friday but experienced a huge drop the rest of the weekend.

The movie took in nearly half of its weekend total, $14.4 million, on Friday, then stumbled with just $8.8 million and $7.2 million the following two days.

'Borat', by contrast, earned more on Saturday than Friday. It could mean that while there was a lot of initial demand to see the movie, it's word-of-mouth value may not be as strong as 'Borat'.

The big drop also forced Universal to issue a new estimate about the flick on Saturday, which was roughly $10 million less than it and other studios were expecting after the Friday opening.

'Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs', took second place with $28.5 million after it held up extremely well and dropped only 32 percent from its opening weekend. 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen' fell from first to third with $24.2 million, as the film improved its total to $339.2 million and continued its march towards $400 million.

Sandra Bullock (photosSandra Bullock photos)'s 'The Proposal' earned another $10.5 million to officially became the biggest hit of the actress' career, after 'Speed'. 'The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3', fell out of the top ten after four weekends, without earning so much as $100 million, despite starring John Travolta and Denzel Washington.

Meanwhile, 'I Love You, Beth Cooper', which seemed to have plenty of buzz thanks to the first Hayden Panettiere's nude scene, opened with a weak seventh place debut and just $5 million in ticket sales.

Here's the complete rundown for the weekend box office:

1. Bruno, $30.4 million.
2. Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, $28.5 million.
3. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, $24.2 million.
4. Public Enemies, $14.1 million.

6. The Hangover, $9.9 million.
7. I Love You, Beth Cooper, $5 million.
8. Up, $4.7 million.
