Brad Pitt Shells Out $1 Million For Neo Rauch Painting

Brad Pitt and Naomi Campbell were among the buyers at a VIP preview of Art Basel this week.

Pitt spent over $950,000 on a Neo Rauch oil painting, entitled 'Etappe'. The 9-foot-wide painting, done in 1998, shows a swirling view of a driver behind a red racecar, with workers nearby carrying hoses.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the actor eyed the painting for several minutes while fidgeting with his goatee.

He initially walked away but returned within minutes with his Los Angeles collector friends Eli and Edythe Broad to make the big purchase.

Art Basel is an international contemporary art exhibition held each year in Basel, Switzerland.

It typically features more than 2,500 artists, ranging from the great masters of Modern art to the latest generation of emerging stars, which makes it the largest of its kind in the world. The exhibition has been called the 'Olympics of the Art World' by the New York Times.

It wasn't the first time Pitt was attending either. Last year, he bought a white marble table by a Dutch designer and an aluminum rug by a Colombian designer at the event.
