Billy Crystal Replaces Eddie Murphy To Host Oscars For Ninth Time

Billy Crystal is returning to host the Oscars one more time.

The 63-year-old comedian, who has hosted Hollywood's big night eight times, jokes that he took the gig "so the young woman in the pharmacy will stop asking my name when I pick up my prescriptions."

"Some of the best moments of my career have happened on the Oscar stage," he adds. "I am thrilled to be back there."

The last time Crystal hosted was in 2004 but earlier this year the actor hinted that he was 'itchy' to host the Oscars again.

"I did it," he said of his brief appearance at the awards earlier this year, "and people wanted to see me, they stood up, and I couldn't talk for about a minute. And, um, I got a little itchy. So we'll see what happens."

"It's always fun. It's really hard, but maybe one or two more times? I don't know. They know where I am."

The announcement will help bring some stability to the awards show, which have been in crisis since producer Brett Ratner quit the show Tuesday amid the backlash that ensued over his use of an anti-gay slur and his handpicked host, Eddie Murphy, dropped out a day later.

"I'm thrilled to welcome Billy back to the Oscar stage," Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences president, Tom Sherak, says in a statement. "He's a comic legend and Oscar icon, and it feels good to have him back where he belongs."
