'Beauty and the Geek' Cancelled For Being 'Sexist'

A Turkish television station has decided to cancel its version of reality show 'Beauty and the Geek' after complaints from viewers and the government that the program was 'sexist'.

It caused an uproar after one of the female contestants incorrectly identified famous maestro Luciano Pavorotti as Bill Gates and US President George W. Bush as 'Clinton Bush'.

Some girls also had trouble naming famous home-grown politicians, such as when Mehmet Agar was identified as Mehmet Akif.

The minister in charge of women and family affairs, Nimet Cubukcu, complained that the program was reinforcing "negative and humiliating prejudice against women", called it "the most vulgar public demonstration of gender discrimination that has appeared on television screens" and said it was "example of the negative and humiliating prejudice against women that is portrayed in the media."

The show which pairs intelligent but socially inept men with attractive but ditzy women, was originally scheduled to run for 10 weeks. But it will end less than a month after it debuted even after receiving top ratings.
