Barbie To Be Featured In Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue

Move over Kate Upton (photosKate Upton photos), Barbie will be making her debut in this year's Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue.

But rather than apologize for recent criticism levelled at Barbie for what she teaches young girls about body image, Mattel says the recent appearance is to tell critics that the doll is proudly "unapologetic" about who she is.

"As a legend herself, and under constant criticism about her body and how she looks, posing in the issue gives Barbie and her fellow legends an opportunity to own who they are, celebrate what they have done and be unapologetic," Mattel says in a statement.

The four page feature presents Barbie as "the doll that started it all."

The magazine's release next week will also coincide with the release of a limited-edition Sports Illustrated Barbie with the doll in the familiar black-and-white swimsuit she wore when introduced in 1959.

Mattel says Ruth Handler, the woman who was president of the toy manufacturer and is remembered for her role in marketing the Barbie doll, once said "Barbie has always represented that a woman has choices."
