'Avatar' Moves Past $1 Billion and Continues To Dominate Box Office

James Cameron's 'Avatar' continued its dominance at the box office this week as it took in another $68.3 million domestically and steamrolled past the $1 billion mark worldwide.

In doing so the big budget science fiction flick became only the fifth movie ever to hit the billion mark, behind only 'Titanic' ($1.84 billion) and 'The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King' ($1.12 billion), 'The Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest' ($1.07 billion) and 'The Dark Knight' ($1.02 billion).

At its current pace, 'Avatar' will become the second highest earning movie of all time -- second only to Cameron's own 'Titanic'. Just when you thought there was no way the filmmaker could ever live up to the record-setting 'Titanic'.

Cameron is now the only man to direct two movies that have topped $1 billion.

As for the rest of the box office this weekend, 'Sherlock Holmes' stayed in second spot with $38.4 million, and 'Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel' layed claim to third with $36.6 million.

'Sherlock' dropped 41% from its opening weekend -- an expected drop for movies in their second week. By comparison, 'Avatar' has dropped only 11% since it opened three weeks ago.

Meanwhile, 'It's Complicated', 'The Blind Side' and 'Up in the Air' held up especially well from last week.

Here's the complete rundown of the weekend box office:

1. Avatar, $68.3 million.
2. Sherlock Holmes, $38.4 million.
3. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, $36.6 million.
