'Avatar' Breaks Blu-Ray Record and Takes Over As Top Selling DVD

Just four days since its release, 'Avatar' is already the year's top-selling home entertainment title.

Consumers snapped up 6.7 million copies of the first 'Avatar' DVDs and Blu-ray Discs, despite it only including 2-D versions of the film without the extras and bonus features.

The sci-fi feature easily outpaced the 6.5 million copies of 'The Twilight Saga: New Moon', which had been the year's previous hottest DVD.

That number also includes 2.7 million Blu-ray discs, to become the fastest-selling disc of all time. It broke 'The Dark Knight's Blu-ray sales record of 2.5 million units total, which was set over one and a half years, in just four days.

The combined sales have brought in an estimated $130 million to the movie's already inflated moneybin.

"Grocery and drug stores sold more Avatar in one day than they sold of The Dark Knight during its entire life on shelves," says a 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment spokesman.

"My sources are telling me that Best Buy has sold twice as many Blu-ray players as they normally do since the biggest movie of all time landed in stores," he claims.

"Merchants are estimating that Avatar Blu-ray sales are north of 50%, a remarkable percentage for the format and for the home entertainment category. We'll have more in the coming weeks, but Avatar is on track to do for Blu-ray what it did for 3D in theaters."

A special edition release, with extensive bonus features, is expected to hit stores in November. And a 3D edition of 'Avatar' will be released in 2011. Fox and the filmmakers wanted to wait until a greater number of homes were equipped with 3D televisions before its release.
