Australian DJs Break Silence and Apologize For Royal Hoax Call

The two Australian DJs responsible for pranking a nurse at the hospital where Kate Middleton had been admitted are apologizing for the call that ended in tragedy after the nurse killed herself in an apparent suicide,

Mel Greig and Michael Christian say they are "shattered, gutted and heartbroken" that what was meant to be a joke resulted in such severe consequences for a family.

"There's not a minute that goes by that we don't think about her family and what they must be going through," 2DayFM radio host Mel Greig told Australia's 'A Current Affair'. "And the thought that we may have played a part in that is gut-wrenching."

"I've wanted to just reach out to them and just give them a big hug and say sorry. I hope they're OK, I really do. I hope they get through this."

Police have not disclosed the cause of Saldanha's death, but it's widely assumed it was related to the events from the call.

The pair said when the idea came up, no one expected that they would actually be put through to the duchess' ward.

"We thought a hundred people before us would've tried it. We just assumed we'd get cut off at every single point and that'd be it," Christian said.

"The joke 100 percent was on us," he said. "The idea was never, 'Let's call up and get through to Kate,' or 'Let's speak to a nurse.' The joke was our accents are horrible, they don't sound anything like who they're intended to be. We wanted to be hung up on."

The radio station announced earlier this morning that it was cancelling the hosts' Hot 30 show and issuing a company-wide suspension of prank calls.

The decision follows the suspension of all advertising on 2Day FM.
