Ann Curry Tearfully Says Farewell, Steps Down As 'Today' Co-Host

After a week of speculation, Ann Curry confirmed this morning on the 'Today' show that she would be stepping down as co-host.

Surrounded by Matt Lauer, Al Roker, and Natalie Morales, Curry teared up and her voice broke as she shared the news.

"This is not easy to say but today is going to be my last morning as a regular role of Today," Curry said. "This is not how I expected to ever leave this couch after 15 years. But I am so grateful especially to all of you who watch."

"We often call ourselves a family, but you are the real Today show family. You are why I've ventured into dangerous places and interviewed dictators and jumped out of planes and climbed mountains. I have loved you and I have wanted to give you the world and I still do."

Curry said that NBC has given her "some fancy new titles" and will travel all over the world contributing stories to the network.

"I'm not even sure I can sleep in anymore," she joked.

"I'm sorry I couldn't carry the ball over the finish line, but man did I try," she said. "So sorry I turned into a sob sister. I hope you'll wish me well."

Matt Lauer, who signed a reported $25 million a year deal to stay on 'Today' a few months ago, told Curry: “You have the biggest heart in the business."

"You put it on display every singe day in this studio you have for almost 20 years on this show. The way you care about people comes through in every singe story you report."

Curry will appear on primetime specials and pieces for NBC broadcasts and will fill in as a substitute anchor when needed on 'Dateline', 'Nightline' and 'Today'.

Although it seems rather odd that Curry was barely given 5 minutes after 15 years on the show while Meredith Vieira received a full morning farewell after a handful of years.
