'American Idol' Winner Is Kris Allen In Finale

Kris Allen shook his head in disbelief when he was finally named the 'American Idol' winner last night.

"Adam deserves this. I'm sorry, I don't even know what to feel right now. This is crazy," said a stunned Allen of Conway, Arkansas.

"The underdog, the dark horse, came back and wins the nation," Seacrest said after reading the 23-year-old's name after a record-setting 100 million votes determined Allen as the Season 8 winner.

Simon Cowell had declared his support for Adam Lambert on Tuesday's show and said: "The whole idea about doing a show like this is that you hope you can find a worldwide star -- I genuinely believe with all my heart that we have found that with you."

But, perhaps sensing an upset, Cowell was more gracious on finale night prior to declaring a winner: "To both of you, and I don't normally mean this, I thought you were both brilliant ... the future's all yours."

Even after his win, Allen seemed unsure he had a right to snatch victory from favorite Adam Lambert in keeping with his persona when he first tried out for the competition.

"You know, there's probably people who are better than me," Allen said when asked by the judges if he was the best singer around in his first audition.

"I was genuinely shocked," revealed Allen backstage. "I felt shocked almost every week that I made it. And, to be the American Idol, I'm completely shocked."

"I actually feel Adam deserves this just as much as I do. He's an amazing performer and a gifted guy. It was fun doing this with him. Adam does his thing and I'm going to do mine. That's what I did throughout this whole competition and obviously, it worked."

"I think we just felt each other's energy, and it was nice. It just became this really good friendship. I'm proud of him."

"I think Kris won because he's a great artist and I was happy to be runner-up to that," added Lambert.
