'Alvin and the Chipmunks' Sequel Gets A Director

Betty Thomas has signed on to direct 'Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel', the follow-up to 2007's surprise hit featuring the lovable chipmunks.

The sequel is expected to introduce the Chipmunks' female counterparts, the Chipettes. The characters were introduced in the 1980s 'Alvin and the Chipmunks' cartoon in its first season.

The female counterparts — Brittany, Jeanette, and Eleanor - paralleled the original chipmunks in personality and mischief.

The complete voice cast of the CGI characters from the original (Justin Long, Jesse McCartney, and Matthew Gray Gubler) are all expected to return. Although Jason Lee, who played Dave, hasn't signed on the dotted line yet, all indications are that he will reprise his role. The sequel currently has an expected release date of Christmas Day in 2009.

The 2007 movie took in over $217 million domestically, and earned more than $360 million worldwide. That made it the ninth biggest hit of the year in 2007 -- ahead of '300', 'Ratatouille', 'The Simpsons Movie' and 'Knocked Up'.
