ABC Renews 'Modern Family', 'The Middle' and 'Cougar Town'

ABC has ordered up a second helping of its hit Wednesday night freshman comedy block.

The network made the announcement during the Television Critics Association press tour Tuesday, after kicking off the day with its Lost panel.

ABC took a gamble by launching four all-new comedies in a two-hour block on Wednesday nights but the move has paid off many times over.

All but cancelled 'Hank' have performed solidly and will be back.

'Modern Family' is the breakout hit of the night, starring Ed O'Neill as the grumpy head of a diverse and quirky extended family.

There is no decision yet on the fate of 'Scrubs', 'Ugly Betty' and 'Better Off Ted'.

“I’m not going to lie,” conceded ABC Entertainment President Steve McPherson. “The numbers are not encouraging.”

ABC has also ordered a spinoff of 'The Bachelor' called 'Bachelor Pad' in which former contestants will live together in a Big Brother-style house.
