'24' Ponders Plans For Movie After Eighth Season
"My hope is to go after the eighth season," Gordon told reporters at a Television Critics Association event, "and Keifer and I have talked about it, and I think that’s sort of what we're aiming for." Asked if he really planned on ending the show after another season, Gordon replied: "I don't know. I take it one day at a time." "I think we came to the conclusion... and I think we're in agreement with Fox that the only way we're going to do a movie is after the show's over. I don't think a big-screen 24 works while Jack is on TV." "We realize now that Jack is more a human being than we really thought. He's not the Superman everyone thinks he is." Star Kiefer Sutherland, who plays Jack Bauer, agreed with producers: "I see him as a really human figure, and I think there is something innately tragic about people. I think there is no winning. We're all going to die. There's something kind of sad in that, and yet there's something really beautiful and hopeful." This isn't the first we've heard of a '24' movie on the big-screen, but it's the first time producers have acknowledged that one couldn't be done unless the show was over. But interestingly, if the show is cancelled on TV -- which could only be due to low ratings -- would there really be enough interest in a movie? Not to mention, the show would have to ditch the real-time format that's made it famous. '24' Executive producer Howard Gordon says that he plans on taking the show to the big-screen after it comes to an end on TV -- and that may be sooner than you think.
