$1.4 Million In Chopard Jewels Stolen At Cannes Film Festival

Chopard jewels worth more than $1 million that were destined for the Cannes Film Festival red carpet have been stolen.

The luxury jewels from the official sponsor of the festival had been store in a safe. However, police say the whole safe was taken out of the wall from the room of the Chopard employee in the Suite Novotel hotel.

The company also designs the coveted Palme d'Or awards for the best film, actor and actress at the festival.

Thieves and countless numbers of prostitutes are known to descend on Cannes during the two-week festival. However, this is one of the biggest heists to hit the ceremony in recent years.

Coincidentally, Sofia Coppola's 'The Bling Ring' -- a movie based on the true story of teenagers who stole more than #3 million from the homes of celebrities -- debuted at the festival yesterday.
